Descant double horns

Bb / high F treble double horn, model 61

Helmut Finke applied for a patent on July 3, 1975 for the basic idea with two separate lead pipes for each side of the horn. It was first implemented on a Bb / high F treble double horn, then transferred to the triple horn and now used in this new design. The advantage is an independently tunable high F section and a long leadpipe on the B side that is not interrupted. This system has significantly reduced the tonal difference between the two sides of the horn.

In the concertos written between 1740 and 1800, the baroque horn is mainly played in its highest register, because here the naturals are close together. After the horn had been increasingly scaled in the course of the Classical and Romantic periods and the "clarino" position was no longer playable, the horn concertos by Leopold Mozart, Fiala, Neruda, Josef Reicha, Sperger and others had to be adapted for trumpet. The Bb/High F treble double horn, however, allows the above mentioned works or other late baroque or early classical works to be performed again for horn. At the same time it serves as a full Bb horn. The illustration shows the Bb/High F treble double horn with A stop valve.

Bb / high Bb treble double horn, model 60

For the Bb / high Bb double horn we use a different design concept than for the Bb / high F, because the short high Bb horn means that it is not possible to use the bump and the bell on the lower horn side. Both sides of the horn use the first part of the leadpipe together, but are then separated by a double valve, which switches back and forth between the ends (the conical pipe area between valve block and bell) at the same time. This results in two largely separate instrument parts that only use the rest of the bell. The two horn sides are coordinated independently of each other. An A-stop valve is installed on the deep B-side, but this can also be omitted if required.
